So we actually worked on the boat this weekend. Jamie finally "hatched" on Friday so he'll no longer be giving nazi history tours to historians. Yay. So now we can get on with life. He gives his first real tour today.
This weekend we took up the starboard side sail track and replaced all but one bolt with dowels like the rest of the deck. Sadly it started to rain in the middle of it and our sad shrink wrap job directed the water from the mast right on to it. Not so good. One bolt was broken off and sticking above the deck so we still need to replace that one still. It seems really seized into the deck so some wrestling will be required.
I plan on doing some clean up and sanding this Thursday. I'm thinking Thursdays will be my boat day. Jamie has Fridays off so that will be his boat day. Going to Maine for my brother's graduation this weekend. so no boat work.
And in other plans, we are thinking about buying an apt building in Portland, ME. A 3 unit place. We'd plan on commuting from ME to Boston for Mon-Thurs and living on the boat during the week. This will give us a place to keep our stuff, get out of Boston, and will hopefully pay for itself giving us a bartering chip for later in life. |

So I think our plans have been derailed. Yep. Jamie really likes his new job and I can't blame him: He'll make about what he made doing sysadmin/tech work and have 4 months off in the winter. Can't beat that. I guess I could see the headlights coming for sometime now but it really threw me for a loop. So we've been trying to sort things out:
1. Boat should be paid off in May 2. School debt should be over in August 3. Lease ends Sept. 1st 4. Jamie's old debt should be cleaned up in Sept 5. Jamie's work ends in November. November is a scary month to sail from New England.
And to add to that we have some concerns with: 1. Money/Savings (gotta pay for summer Boston storage) 2. Work to make the boat "livable" 3. Work to make the boat "cruisable/sailable" 4. What to do with all our stuff 5. Mobile issues (insurance, etc.) 6. The wanderlust bug
It's all alot to deal with right now. Our plans for the moment (until we've flushed them further) are:
1. Work this summer to make Rubicon livable: No leaks, heated, comfortable, etc. But still keep the rice cooker! heh. 2. Since our current roommate will be moving out some time this summer, we're going to try to negociate our lease down. We're thinking we can knock at least $200 off the price tag. Then we'll put in a sliding door between the dining area and the livingroom to save on heating bills. We rarely use that end of our place anyways. If we're sucessful in knocking down the rent then we'll stay. We'll have the option of always getting another roommate to keep things cheap. If not we'll look for a 1 bedroom somewhere.
Why keep a place? a) To not be so pressured to get Rubicon done b) Place to keep our stuff for now c) Winter escape from the boat d) Cats e) Servers.
3. Move aboard Rubicon this summer as soon as she's livable. Hopefully by August. 4. Travel this winter somehow?? ==> This is the big hole in our plans currently. If Jamie needs to be back in March, I'd like to keep my job. I'm thinking of trying to get some kind of unpaid leave for a month or so - hopefully longer. I don't know how well that would go but the Indians I work with do it all the time. I'd just rather go longer than a month. 5. Jamie goes back to work in the spring. 6. We finally move out of the apt. for good in the spring so we don't have to pay rent and summer storage fees.
This plan will probably change dramatically but at least its some kind of plan. I don't do well without a plan. When Jamie opened up the discussion of staying around Boston, it really threw me for a loop. I've been here for 8 years. We've had this plan for at least 3 years now so suddenly it all changes. Don't get me wrong, the end goal is still the same - travel. The plan to do so has changed. To me the method of means of travel never mattered, just the need to do it.
And in other news, we've picked out a water heater by Atlantic Marine. Basically its the biggest one that will fit in our tiny lazarette opening. Model T12E. Next fun purchase will be a faucet from Home Depot. Its all about plumbing! |

| The Emotional Tales of Rubicon |

Welcome!
This LJ has been set up to be an outlet for the emotional side of restoring, living on, and sailing aboard our boat Rubicon. Amy will probably be the person updating this journal so that might help with the perspective.
Anyways, this journal will be an outlet for the day-to-day trials and triumphs. We'll curse the seized bolts, the leaky decks, and the Boston Harbor boaters. We'll party with Duck Tours and make friends with the wharf rats. Who knows. Anyways, hopefully it will be an interesting read and I'll try to keep it balanced between the frustrated posts and the happy celebrations.
For some of you, this may be too much information and if you find yourself in that party, then I suggest either checking the dasboat site from time to time or join the mailing list. Whenever I update that site, I send out the post to the list so you never even have to come to the site other than just signing up. I only post once maybe every 3 months or so so don't worry about me spamming you. Those updates are pretty factual and straight forward. "Edited" if you will.
Anyways, enjoy and feel free to add your comments!
